Hook and Eye was another work in which I wanted to appear and disappear.
The costume for this performance consists of a boiler suit with Velcro sewn onto it and piezo contact-microphones, encased in ceramic, stitched inside.
The Velcro was sewn on the suit so I could stick to myself. This made a ripping noise as I moved, which was amplified by the microphones. At the back of the suit a handmade panel for XLR cables enabled me to plug the ensemble into a sound desk.
In the performance I made sharp, rhythmic movements to produce sound. The noises were picked up by a sound-to-light unit, triggering a light bulb, which illuminated me as I moved. The flickering light often meant I felt like I was performing in a film or as a film, or even by the light of a guttering candle.
