MKVH [Milton Keynes Vertical Horizontal] (2006)
MKVH (Milton Keynes Vertical Horizontal), Milton Keynes Gallery, 30 March – 1 April, 2006.
MKVH was a 39 hour coach journey in which a group of volunteers were driven around the Milton Keynes road grid until our coach ran out of diesel.
Growing up near Milton Keynes, this work forms part of my long term interest in the town and was the first work in which I explored consciousness about oil and its relation to climate change and energy infrastructure.
I went on to make a number of works related to the transport system in the new town of Milton Keynes.
MKVH is documented in the book MKVH (The Screenplay) which was published by Milton Keynes Gallery in 2007.
The sequel to this work A to B in MK was made in 2018, twelve years after MKVH. A to B in MK took the form of an artists' book documenting twelve journeys on the Milton Keynes Redway system; a shared pedestrian and cycling network and low carbon alternative that runs in parallel to the road grid. A to B in MK was launched with an alternative guided tour of the Redways at The Festival of Curves Slopes and Detours.
